Mr. Smith was appointed to the the IDA Board in June 2020 to represent the Totaro District.
Mr. George R. Smith was born and reared in Brunswick County, Virginia. He attended the Brunswick County Public Schools. After high school graduation Mr. Smith served in the United States Army for 3 years. He then returned to his hometown where he graduated from Saint Paul’s College with a degree in Elementary Education. He later received a master’s degree from Virginia State University in Educational Media. During his 30+ year career in education, he taught in the Virginia Public School System in Staunton and Brunswick County.
Mr. Smith was elected to the state board of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia in 1992 where he served for 28 years, 13 as vice president. He also served two terms each on the Brunswick County Planning Commission and the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program.
Mr. Smith is married to the former Vashie Rawlings. They have two children, Brian and Sandra.
