The Economic Development Coordinating Council (EDCC) was established in November 2009 in an effort to strengthen the collaboration and coordination of government, business and other leadership in endeavors to enhance the quality of life and raise the standard of living for Brunswick County. It was created by the Brunswick County Industrial Development Authority (IDA and County Government based on findings of a strategic planning process.
In 2007 the IDA and County Administration worked with a consulting firm to develop a plan that was documented in a report entitled, "An Economic Development Blueprint for Brunswick County." In developing this plan community meetings were held in different areas of the County to give our citizens an opportunity to have input – express their concerns and tell us what they wanted to see happen – in strategies to improve economic development. One of the things that consistently came up in those discussions was the need for better cooperation and coordination between the County Government, the three incorporated towns, the business community and key County agencies; along with more citizen input. The Economic Development Coordinating Council was created as a tool to facilitate this outcome.
The Economic Development Coordinating Council meets the first Wednesday of every quarter at 10:30 a.m. in the IDA conference room. It holds as its mission, "Bringing together private and non-profit leaders with public sector leadership to coordinate economic development efforts and develop economic development partnerships." It has three (3) standing committees: (1) Growth and Development; (2) Marketing/Public Relations; and (3) Education and Workforce Development.
