County Cultural Resources
Even
though ours is a culture with strong rural roots,
good food at home and lots to do around the farm and
business, there are few weeks without something fun
and interesting to do in and around Brunswick. With
mild winters, delicious spring and fall temperatures
— an 85º day in November is not unusual
in Brunswick — and sun and water perfect temperatures
from May to September, getting into some fun out of
the house and away from the office is almost a year-round
possibility.
If
nightclubbing is your thing, then you’ll have
a prime reason for an overnight of luxe in Richmond
at the famous Jefferson Hotel and the excitement of
Shockoe Slip. Short of the nightclub culture, you
won’t have to go to Richmond or Raleigh to enjoy
the very best in cultural performances and events
usually found only in large cities. The highly successful
ArtBank of Southside Virginia brings an annual series
of theatre, music and dance performances to Brunswick.
Recognizing the need for our children to also enjoy
the arts at school, the ArtBank includes performances
each year at the schools. In its thirteenth year,
ArtBank selections have wowed 48,000 Brunswick subscribers
with over 145 programs. Recent performances have included
the Richmond Symphony, Richmond Ballet, Shakespearian
plays and hot selections from Broadway. The ArtBank
also provides free or minimal cost programs that include
painting, poetry, music, storytelling and dance. If
you like local and regional fine art that you can
buy, don’t miss an ArtBank art show. There’s
all of this and more. And you won’t have to
drive to the city!
For
great food, live music and dancing, Brunswick County
is the place to be. Annual festivals abound with the
Taste of Brunswick Festival’s Stew Championship
cook-off in the fall and the Beach Music Festival
in the spring. The regional Beach Music Festival draws
big-name performers and attendance is excellent. Local
clubs also keep us well fed with annual fests that
bring in Chesapeake Bay seafood, top quality pork
and beef cooked in the best southern styles.
The
Brunswick Museum in Lawrenceville is a good stop to
learn about county culture over the years. Brunswick
and other nearby counties are dotted with interesting
museums that cover everything from railroading to
dolls.
For
a change of cultural pace, enjoy a weekend trip or
night out at the Colonial Downs off-track satellite
wagering facility in Brunswick. There’s always
a local crowd as well as visitors from other states
that keep things lively and good food for snacks or
a meal are served daily.
There’s
Lots to do in Brunswick
Just
as Governor Berkeley was eager to explore Indian paths
that led from Jamestown to the southwest area that
became Brunswick, we are excited about our plans to
take part in Virginia’s Jamestown 2007 Celebration
events. Many are getting ready for the visitors to
our county who, like Berkeley, want to explore Brunswick,
to ride our new Rails to Trails biking route, to canoe
down the historic Meherrin, cruise our many antique
shops and roadside sales, dive, swim, kayak and camp
around the clear waters of Lake Rawlings, fish for
famous Brunswick bass or just take a leisurely cruise
on Lake Gaston, hunt with some of our famous hunt
club pros, start a day with a pile of pancakes on
the deck overlooking our 1850s Courthouse Square and
end the exploration, much as they did in the 1800s,
with a large bowl of authentic Brunswick County Stew.

After
you get a taste of Brunswick, you, like Governor Spottswood
in 1714, may find you want to settle here. Back then,
it took a fort — Fort Christanna — to
set up a place to trade. Now you can choose to bring
your business to Brunswick and find a great spot with
plenty of financial incentives already waiting for
you in one of our business parks or towns. Plan a
visit to Brunswick.

the Potential. It’s Endless!
